A valid veterinary-client-patient relationship is required before we can process your order for these items. E-mail Dr. Thal for further information.

Phenylbutazone (bute) paste 12 gm, 1 tube
Phenylbutazone is still the most commonly used and effective anti-inflammatory medication for musculoskeletal use in the horse. It must be used according to prescription. Used correctly, it is usually quite safe. See my article on the use of “bute” and “Banamine.”

$14.31

Banamine paste 1500 mg, single syringe
Banamine paste is a convenient way of dosing this important anti-inflammatory. Has the same safety concerns as bute. Is especially effective for helping with abdominal pain and inflammation in the eye. See the article on the use (and abuse) of bute and banamine.

$25.55

Flunixin meglumine injectable 100 ml (same as banamine)
I only dispense this to clients I know and trust will call a veterinarian if they have a colic emergency. When you purchase from us, you must call before using and communicate with us.

$25.84

Penicillin G 500 ml (Hanford). A commonly used antibiotic that is very effective against common bacteria in the horse. It must be used with caution as it can cause a severe reaction if given with incorrect technique. Penicillin G is the intramuscular form of penicillin. It remains a very effective injectable antibiotic for use in appropriate equine infections. Proper intramuscular injection technique must be used. There is the danger of procaine reaction otherwise. Because of the potential danger in the use of penicillin, we often recommend oral sulfa in its place. We only dispense it to clients we know can give it properly and who are aware of the risks

$30.27

Gastrogard Healing Pak, 28 syringes per case. The only medication proven to heal gastric ulcers in horses. Gastrogard healing pack: Gastrogard is the only medication licensed in the horse that has shown to be effective in the healing of gastric ulcers. Cheaper compounded medications exist but are inferior to this preparation. They have mostly been shown not to work. The best way to know whether or not your horse has ulcers is to have your veterinarian perform gastroscopy with a 3-meter equine gastroscope, which we happen to have!

$1,038.80

Gastrogard Maintenance Pak, 14 syringe pack

$560.78

Ulcergard, 10 syringe pack (about 40 days treatment)
The same medication as Gastrogard, packaged as a preventative. Essentially it is the same medication being given at ¼ the dose. Ulcergard 10 syringe pack (about 40 days treatment): Ulcergard is the same medication as Gastrogard packaged differently and for use for the “prevention of ulcers.” One tube of Ulcergard will last approximately 4 days for a typical light horse.

$371.00

Thyroid Supplement, 1 lb. jar. Thyroid function in horses remains a mystery but there has been much research in the last 5 years that is beginning to increase our understanding. There have been some studies that have called hypothyroidism in adult horses into question. True hypothyroidism in the horse is rare. If your horse has been diagnosed as hypothyroid, you should talk to your veterinarian about the testing required to prove that and whether thyroid supplementation is really required. That said, I have a group of clients whose horses have been on thyroid supplementation for a long time and are doing well on it. For those clients, I still provide it.

$21.00

Thyroid Supplement, 10 lb. pail

$173.60

SMZ 800 / 150 mg 500 ct. bottle. This is the most commonly used oral antibiotic in our practice, and this is the cheapest way I can provide it. Generally a safe medication that is still quite effective when used appropriately. Turns into a paste rapidly when mixed with water in a syringe. See my handout on giving oral meds.

$54.99

Isoxsuprine 20 mg 1000#. Isoxsuprine is still used in the treatment of Navicular Syndrome. Its efficacy has been called into question. In my experience it's a safe drug, and for those who have had success with it I still provide it. In my experience it's a safe drug, and for those who have had success with it I still provide it.

$21.12
